Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How old do I have to be to join?
Senior Members: 18 years or older
Cadets: You may join as a cadet between the ages of 12 and 18. However, cadets may continue in the Cadet Program until their 21st birthday.
By joining CAP, am I obligated to serve in the military?
No. You are under no obligation to join the military, but many do. Approximately 10% of the U.S. Air Force Academy cadet corps got their start in CAP. Cadets that earn the Billy Mitchell Award may enlist in the U.S. Air Force at an advanced pay grade (E-3) over their contemporaries. Regardless of what career path you choose, the skills learned in CAP will prove invaluable.
Who leads and supervises the cadets?
The responsibility to safeguard our cadets is of paramount importance to Viking Squadron and CAP. All of our senior members are fingerprinted and screened by the FBI. All members (including cadets) over age 18 must complete a Cadet Protection session upon entry into the squadron. As part of our leadership training, advanced cadets lead and mentor new cadets under the guidance of senior members.
What is the time commitment required of me?
Active participation is important! Members are expected to attend regularly scheduled Squadron meetings. Currently, regular squadron meetings occur every Tuesday night at 7:00pm. Meetings last approximately 2 hours. In addition, participation in Emergency Services training as well as other special activities is required. This typically involves additional time commitments, including, but not limited to, occasional weekend classroom training as well as participation in actual and/or training missions.
